Recently, when I visited another designer’s home, I was reminded of my affection for Majolica in general and plates in particular. She displays them in her kitchen but Majolica can be art on a wall in almost any room. As an expert Seattle interior designer I keep my eyes alert for vintage pieces and also like mugs and pitchers.

The Majolica I refer to is, “Victorian Majolica, earthenware pottery made in 19th century Britain, Europe and the USA with molded surfaces and colorful clear lead glazes.” You can recognize Majolica by “its naturalistic plant and animal motifs molded in relief and splashed with bold color and clear glazes.”

The colors and motifs are varied as the photos indicate. I am most attracted to the plates artfully displayed on a focal wall and used instead of a picture. What do you think? Would you collect and display Majolica?

Interior design is a composition, a canvas that explores and combines and finally configures as a unit. It is that aha that creates a memory. Lucite or acrylic offers that medium. This expert Seattle interior designer knows that it should be used with restraint and appropriateness.

So what is Lucite? A more technical term is acrylic resin. Acrylic resins are a group of related thermoplastic or thermosetting plastic substances derived from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or other related compounds.

These days we’re entertaining and spending more time at home with our friends and family. Finding a seat for more can be a challenge. In my design practice as an expert Seattle interior designer, I often use ‘small seats’, my name for them. Sometimes they function as a seat, other times as a place for feet, books or beverages. These small seats are no wider or taller than 20-22 inches. I selected a few to share for assorted tastes and settings. Consider adding some small, multipurpose seats at your home.

Oh, the joys of embellishment. A designer dream come true. This expert Seattle interior designer knows that ‘it’s all in the details’. And trims, aka passementerie, are the ticket for that signature appeal and final, finished look.

So what is passementerie anyway? Passementerie or passementarie is the art of making elaborate trimmings or edgings (in French, passements) of applied braid, gold or silver cord, embroidery, colored silk, or beads for clothing or furnishings. There are numerous, excellent vendors that excel in the medium. I first look at Samuel and Sons and Houles.

Early in my design career, when I practiced in Omaha, NE, I participated in a Symphony/ASID Designer Showhouse. The room was round making art placement challenging so I used an easel. This expert Seattle interior designer was fortunate to have Larry Ferguson add his art with a portrait of my daughter and me in vintage clothing. That’s when I became inspired with black and white photography. In the photo below, you can see the black and white portrait on an antique easel. Note how the wallpaper I selected emphasizes the round room. The desk finish is trompe l’oeil. This project was a very creative exercise.

Landscapes and portraits are design friendly additions to an interior design. They are a reminder of events and times in our lives.
