Are Hemlines Dropping at Your Home?

Written by faith | 0

This Seattle interior designer read the headlines from Milan, Italy the past week. ”Aside from bold color, the biggest news off the spring-summer 2011 is the skirt, or better yet. The hemline. With two days to go until the end of the Milan Fashion Week, the mini skirt has all but disappeared from the runway, replaced by hemlines that fall around or below the knee. Long skirts are also very popular”, says Daniela Petroff, AP Fashion Writer.

What does this mean for home furnishings? Are all those chair legs disappearing? What would this look like? I’ve done some research and here are some examples from Hickory Chair.

My design sense enjoys a combination of skirt lengths in a room for interest and appropriateness. Some chairs and sofas simply are best skirted. But for many years the minimalist look has embraced legs… I am curious if Milan will encourage the furnishing industry to lower hemlines too. What do you think?

Interior Design Repeats via Seattle Met

Written by faith | 0

As an interior designer in Seattle, I often ponder how to share my knowledge with a larger audience. And then fate intervenes. A few weeks ago, Hannah Bostwick, an intern at Seattle Met magazine, called for an interview. She wanted some tips for readers about using patterns as they decorate. So the October issue features her well written article and my tips. Check it out.

I love the title she chose…now that’s creative. “Can You Repeat That?”

Some key concepts:

  • Create Balance For a clean, integrated look, combine patterns with different scales and textures.
  • Use Color Carefully Choose a core color and repeat it in each pattern to create consistency throughout a room.
  • Mix It Up Mixing multiple patterns is key to creating a complete look.

Rattan Furniture is Never Out of Style

Written by faith | 0

As I review the projects for my interior design firm in Seattle, I recognize a thread emerging with the use of rattan. A piece used carefully communicates a unique flavor to a room of interior furnishings. Geography knows no limits with rattan and wicker so home furnishings ensembles featuring these materials can be found in the living, dining and bedrooms of today’s homes.

Some companies are synonomous with rattan and wicker: Palacek and Pierce Martin come to mind immediately. Both are established innovators with this material. I am pleased to see that Palacek plans to acquire Pierce Martin.

Palacek from Landfair Blog

The story of Palacek began 30 years ago, as a basket company in the San Francisco Bay Area. The expertly woven baskets drew steady admirers, which grew into loyal customers, and an expanding product line. Anyone recall the days of Palacek baskets? The evolution into a major resource for rattan and wicker continues with the acquisition of Pierce Martin. I also respect the eco-committment of the company,”to use sources that are gentle on both the environment and the people who work within it. The woods are largely plantation grown, use abundant, quickly renewable materials like rattan, abaca, and seagrass. Palacek relies on water-based finishes for the paintable furniture, making them safer for families, and employees.”

Fashion Week Inspires Interior Design in Seattle

Written by faith | 0

It must be all the NYC fashion talk that has this interior designer in Seattle thinking Oscar de la Renta fabrics by Lee Jofa for a master sitting room addition.

This bedroom is all about blue and white, very classic and traditional, and the addition brings a comfortable window seat into the mix. So I am collecting fabric ideas for the cushion and accent pillows. Here’s a couple from Lee Jofa I’m considering.

Retreat to your personal oasis from your over-stimulated world of endless carpools, coordination of details and schedules to your private suite created just for you. Relax and enjoy the soothing textures and calming colors coordinated to give you the perfect respite from your daily stresses. Add a comfy window seat, cup of tea and some good reading. Ah-h, bliss.

Are You Ready for Paisley? Yay or Nay?

Written by faith | 0

Recently Seattle Metropolitan interviewed me for the October issue. The questions were about using patterns in decorating; tips, getting started, trends and so on. I will share more when the interview is available. In my interior designs in Seattle, I like to use sophisticated patterns on sofas, chairs, ottomans and benches so this was an opportunity to share my insights. Thank you Seattle Metropolitan!

Paisley is always a stalwart, in menswear (think ties). Many of the fashionistas can be seen in dresses bearing the paisley pattern.

From Wikipedia, Paisley or Paisley pattern is a droplet-shaped vegetable motif of Indian and Persian origin. The pattern is sometimes called “Persian pickles” by American traditionalists, especially quilt-makers, or “Welsh pears” in Welsh textiles as far back as 1888. Azerbaijan’s bright uniform and colorful paisley pants was one of the highlights of the 2010 Olympic games.

For myself I love paisley used as wallcovering… and below is a wonderful installation by Thibaut. It is just so sophisticated.
