Before and After: Updated Portland Kitchen-Not Ready to Downsize

Written by faith | 2

Last week Bridget Otto of the Oregonian featured this Seattle interior designer‘s kitchen project in the Home and Garden section. My friends and clients, Don and Sally Wolcott, contacted me last summer and quoting Sally, “We are not ready to downsize”. Bucking a trend they instead chose to remodel their kitchen and family room fireplace. Since before and after images energize and inspire, my post is about just that!

The ‘before’ kitchen was 20 years old and showing age.

Ready for a remodel

Bridget, “the Wolcotts had considered repairing and painting their cabinetry, but when they tallied up the costs, they realized they’d be paying a good bit for the same cabinets.” I suggested Pacific Design and as it turns out the owner, Mel Archer, built their cabinets 20 years ago. Sally and Don eagerly renewed their relationship with Mel to remodel their kitchen.

Some key changes:

  • The glaze, which softened the paint and added definition to the cabinets.
  • Angled power strips made by Task Lighting eliminate power receptacles in the new tile backsplash.
  • Status Ceramics backsplash tile with a custom crackle finish

Gather family and friends in your new kitchen and surround them with aromas of your marinara sauce simmering on your commercial style gas range. Imagine the stories, laughter and toasts as folks savor your tasty appetizers. Then relax as your nearly silent dishwasher finishes the cleanup as you continue your conversation. Suzanne Kasler’s Clean, Classic Style: A Faith Sheridan Favorite

Written by faith | 0

Late afternoon and this Seattle interior designer is enjoying a visually delightful tour through the new Hickory Chair Suzanne Kasler supplement. Her tailored, detail rich but so very subtle design suits my sensibility. And it isn’t until I looked at all her pieces that I realized how many I have specified for my clients.

The Asheworth Campaign desk fit perfectly into a penthouse den with a custom bookcase made to match by a local artisan. And my clients provided an antique chair.

Expose Your Mood with Color

Written by faith | 0

Last week I spoke to a group of leading realtors about design trends from my perspective as a Seattle interior designer. The title of my presentation was ‘Deconstructing Design Trends’. With great support from Benjamin Moore, I shared the hows and whys of the development of color and design trends.

This year the theme from Benjamin Moore is balance. Quoting Doty Horn, Director of Design for Benjamin Moore, “color reflects your mood - color exposes how you feel.” Hear Doty in a presentation at Hirschfield Paint this past November.

The familiar provides balance as does structure. Seeing the unity in our global communities makes us feel more comfortable and connected. What colors do you like that speak to your mood? Please share.

We have something special for you…

Our colleagues at Design Success University just released their latest
2010 - 2011 Interior Design Fee & Salary Survey eBook ($79 Value)
.
2009 - 2010 was predictably slow for many designers. We were saddened to
see so many talented professions give up and close their doors.

It wasn’t all bad news, though. A surprisingly large percentage of designers
experienced growth in 2010, and many expect 2011 to be up significantly.

It’s encouraging to see that the firms who are still around regrouped and
invested in their education and positioning so they could emerge from this
economic downturn with more profits and a clear plan for greater success.
Are you one of those firms?

DSU provides this eBook with their compliments. Click here to request
your copy and plan an amazing 2011!
