Planning for Outdoor Living Spaces in the Northwest

Written by faith | 2

In one week I travel to High Point Furniture Market. My search list for Seattle outdoor space products is growing. An explosion of indoor/outdoor area rugs appeals to my ‘go explore’ curiosity. One of my first stops is Capel Rugs. With a large collection of colors and patterns, there is a style for any taste.

Sunny Weather is Calling Seattle Outdoor Spaces

Quoting from the website, “Capel Rugs was the first to bring outdoor rugs to market, and today we proudly lead in this desirable category. With designs and colors that mimic indoor quality area rugs, Capel Anywhere™ rugs make it easy to create a chic, comfortable retreat outdoors. Virtually maintenance-free, Capel outdoor rugs offer soft comfort and weather resistance for porches or patios, or high-traffic durability for kitchens and entryways.”

Imagine living the ‘relaxed lifestyle’ on your outdoor space. It starts with no fuss, durable basics for your rugs and upholstery. Take your ‘staycation’ to a new level of enjoyment. Let our team create the perfect outdoor space plan for you.

What in the World is Passementerie? Find Out Here

Written by faith | 0

Such an exotic word, passementerie. French, of course, so we stumble over the pronunciation, (păs-mĕnˈtrē), and wonder what? In my Seattle interior design practice, I absolutely love to use trims. Here are the various types of trimmings and how you can use them. ( All images courtesy of Samuel and Sons)

  • FRINGE - border or edging of hanging threads, cords, or strips

  • BORDERS, TAPES, BANDS - tapes disguise unruly sewing or may join two fabrics

1.5" Border

  • GIMP - disguise ugly staples on an upholstered chair

1/2" gimp is a mainstay

  • TASSEL TIEBACK - Tassel tiebacks offer an alternative and keep draperies secured to one side

Samuel and Sons is my favorite resource for trimmings or passementerie.. Truly they lead in design for trims with a ready inventory for projects. You can custom design a trim if you desire to make a personal statement. And speaking of statements, the ads placed by Samuel and Sons are showstoppers too!

Well-selected appointments, like passementerie, make a big impact – on pillows, a family upholstery heirloom, lamp shade or custom drapery treatment. Add the personal touch that makes your home complete. Call us today 206.973.3743

Outdoor Spaces Seattle - Signs of Spring

Written by faith | 1

Not a figment of my imagination. I saw daffodils ready to bloom this morning so let’s imagine your Seattle outdoor space. Take an inventory of your present outdoor space and consider these tips. You can create an outdoor space and enjoy a relaxed lifestyle when the temperatures rise and the sun comes out in the Northwest.

    Add Color

The changes in fabric technology and the options are amazing so take advantage. Colorful umbrellas, cushions, pillows, rugs and drapery panels spice up the outdoor space.

    Stay Cool and Dine Outdoors

Even as the temperature climbs you can entertain with ease using an umbrella that covers the entire table. Notice the table accessories that add zest to the table setting. Comfortable seating with cushions invite your guests to linger, share stories and maybe sip some Washington wine.

    Add Colorful Pots

Decorate your outdoor space like a room inside your home. Add plants and complete your color scheme with color accents. You can also add art that finishes the decorating.

Ceiling Art in Seattle? Original Frescoes

Written by faith | 0

Frescoes are an infrequent design element in my Seattle interior design practice. So using them in a recent project creates a new design element to love. Overuse is a no-no and I’m not fond of cutesy either ( a theme room or children’s bedroom is an exception). An addition/remodel project created the opportunity to use them in two areas: a breakfast nook ceiling and the outdoor space inglenook ceiling.

So what is a fresco? There is excellent information at the Fresco School website and I start with a quote from them, “fresco painting is the most practiced method of painting present in every culture and utilized by every known civilization for decorating of the most treasured environments, palaces, public places. It is said that fresco painting is the logical link between architecture and decoration.”

Starting with a vision from my clients, I turned to Charane and Richard Poyorena, Siena Faux and Mural in Bellevue, WA. Working as a team and using presentation boards and conceptual drawings, the outcome is a treasure and the frescoes ‘create the link between architecture and decoration’.

The very careful attention to detail allows the design to integrate with the recessed ceiling fixtures. There is a wonderful chandelier from Currey and Company to complement, #9015 Axel Orb.

The inglenook ceiling adds special interest and an old world feel to the outdoor inglenook. Just as the stone mason carefully added each stone to the fireplace, Charane and Richard painted each area of the ceiling detail. Furniture soon!

Think Spring-Start Dreaming of Outdoor Living

Written by faith | 0

On a record setting cold Saturday, this Seattle interior designer escaped to the Northwest Flower and Garden Show. For three hours, surrounded by inspiring floral and plant gardens, I was transported and inspired.

From Kim Pokorny-Oregon Live

The theme organizers chose for this year’s display gardens was “Once Upon a Time” and many of the gardens were designed to reflect classic stories such as Alice in Wonderland, Wind in the Willows and A Wrinkle in Time. But the recurring theme I saw was reclaimed and re-purposed materials. Tucked into the large and small displays I saw found objects like leftover floor tiles, round ceiling fixtures, wagons, old windows. Not contrived, these items were cleverly integrated into succulent gardens, patios and landscape designs.

Are you getting ready and thinking about your outdoor living space? We can help you design your outdoor room. Last spring we designed a penthouse roof deck and you can see the early stages here.

This is one of the final images when complete.
