Pillow Power on Your Sofa

Written by faith | 0

True confession, this Seattle interior designer is a textile junkie. Textiles infuse a room with patterns, textures and color… and create an emotional response. As a great example, House Beautiful featured 1 Sofa, 6 Designers, 31 Pillows. You can see the article in the February, 2011 issue.

The 6 examples offer a lesson in applying design elements strategically on one major furniture item in your home, the sofa. In the article and discussion you see everything from whimsy with dog photos to white on white, color emphasis, pairs and the collected composition. For myself I love the sophistication of the ‘collected’ example which is described as ‘well-traveled with happy colors’.

What in the World is Passementerie? Find Out Here

Written by faith | 0

Such an exotic word, passementerie. French, of course, so we stumble over the pronunciation, (păs-mĕnˈtrē), and wonder what? In my Seattle interior design practice, I absolutely love to use trims. Here are the various types of trimmings and how you can use them. ( All images courtesy of Samuel and Sons)

  • FRINGE - border or edging of hanging threads, cords, or strips

  • BORDERS, TAPES, BANDS - tapes disguise unruly sewing or may join two fabrics

1.5" Border

  • GIMP - disguise ugly staples on an upholstered chair

1/2" gimp is a mainstay

  • TASSEL TIEBACK - Tassel tiebacks offer an alternative and keep draperies secured to one side

Samuel and Sons is my favorite resource for trimmings or passementerie.. Truly they lead in design for trims with a ready inventory for projects. You can custom design a trim if you desire to make a personal statement. And speaking of statements, the ads placed by Samuel and Sons are showstoppers too!

Well-selected appointments, like passementerie, make a big impact – on pillows, a family upholstery heirloom, lamp shade or custom drapery treatment. Add the personal touch that makes your home complete. Call us today 206.973.3743

Poufs are Practical

Written by faith | 0

The name sounds fussy but the pouf is a performer as this interior designer in Seattle knows. With attitude, this accessory multi-functions throughout the home serving as a place for feet, an extra seat, a small table while delivering punch to your interior. No matter your style there is a pouf just waiting to become an accessory for you to express your design personality.

Here are some for your consideration:

Accessories Tell Your Story

Written by faith | 0

This past week I prepared for an interior design photo-shoot in the Seattle metro. I was reminded once again of the power of accessories to capture the essence of a home and communicate the story of the owners. This project is about a fabulous 2-story pavilion. The main level features a bar in a British Colonial style and large flatscreen for entertainment and parties. The second floor is all about billiards, poker, cigars and scotch.

A Rule to Remember: Interior accessories provide the finishing touch to any space. Accessories give rooms personality, character and texture. Add things that say something about you!

The most important thing to consider when accessorizing a room is that you are not merely ‘filling space’. You are sharing your personality and individuality. So select items you love, that have meaning for you and then showcase them. In this instance, riding and competing with horses is a hobby so we started with cast iron horses sourced at Baker Furniture in Seattle. Surrounding the large flat-screen are images of Seabiscuit acquired by my clients to maintain the message and harmonize with the interior.

Stimulate your Interior - Add Orange

Written by faith | 2

Recently in my Seattle interior design practice, new clients enjoy the color orange. And I love the burst and enthusiasm that orange brings to an interior. :-) Here’s a definition of the symbolism of orange, “Orange is a mixture of yellow and red and shares some of their attributes. It signifies warmth, friendship, practicality and liveliness. Orange is a stimulating color, it stimulates emotions and stands for the change in seasons. It signifies autumn, lying between the warmth of summer and the cool of winter. It is a color that demands attention without screaming for it. It’s found in nature in the leaves of autumn, in the setting sun and in the flesh of oranges. It is warm as red but more friendlier and less passionate, it defines friendship, warmth and goodwill just as red symbolises love and passion.”

Here are a few finds in orange to add some of the attributes to your home.
