My Textile Junkie Love Affair with Shibori Fabrics

Written by faith | 1

Previously I’ve identified myself as a textile junkie. It’s one of my interior design passions. Why? There is so much history around textiles, culture and traditions. And if you’re passionate as I am about textiles, adding the rich history into your design adds greater dimension to your interiors. It allows a story to easily accompany the design concept. And stories are what your home is about.

From Wikipedia, “In Japan, the earliest known example of cloth dyed with a shibori technique dates from the 8th century.”

There are many greats posts on the blog, The Ardent Thread, to add history and information about techniques. The following images are from the blog.

Mix of shibori styles

Many well know companies have shibori patterns available. I love this one from F Schumacher as an accent for pillows. It is 100% silk with a luster that adds dimension and richness to your decor; color is sorbet.

How to Relax and Smell the Roses

Written by faith | 1

A covered area with heaters

We are busier than ever. More time on the road commuting and increased office time are part of the issue. How to slow our fast paced lives, leave the frenzy and relax? and really stop and smell the roses?

I have a few ideas to add relaxation and to make our homes more harmonious and peaceful at the end of a busy day.

  • Take a walk if you can… with your family, dog or neighbor. Breathe.
  • Sit in your favorite chair even for a short time (and plan to return later).
  • Change into comfortable clothes.
  • Check in with your famiy about their day, listen and support.
  • Hopefully dinner isn’t an afterthought or is easily prepared and your family can pitch in. Enjoy some table talk and share stories.
  • Clear the clutter. Clutter distracts, adds a feeling of disorder and uneasiness.
  • Add freshly cut flowers to your weekly grocery list.
  • Surround yourself with books, throw pillows and blankets.Create a space that looks and feels softer, calmer and more relaxing.
  • Add a swing!

Aren’t you feeling relaxed already? Do you need help creating a relaxing home to ease you from the stress? We’re here to help you do just that. Call us today 206.973.3743.

Details Do Make the Difference in Interior Design

Written by faith | 0

Never ever out of style, the use of trims in design ebbs and flows. For my own projects, I’m of the opinion that the use of trimmings adds the finishing touch and detail that elevates a project. Trims make a special statement which captures the eye and draws attention to a lovely fabric or shape. Some refer to trims as embellishment which is a big word that says “anything that adds beauty or elegance”.

My favorite and go-to source is Samuel and Sons which I’m using currently for custom pillow shams in a bedroom.

A perfect combo, Samuel & Sons and Duralee

The specifics for those interested are as follows:

Duralee: Laura Kirar for Highland Court with woven border by Michael Smith - Samuel & Sons

Duralee: Laura Kirar for Highland Court with 1/4″ cord with lip - Samuel and Sons

Previously, I used some unique trims again from Samuel & Sons as I added custom details to another master bedroom. This time the fabrics were from Duralee ~ John Robshaw and again Samuel & Sons.

At our firm, we enjoy collaborating to create something uniquely memorable for our clients. And in my view from 20+ years of practice, trimmings do just that. Call us to discuss your projects and let’s get started. 206-973-3743

Enhance Your Home with Luxe Light Switches

Written by faith | 0

When you walk into a room, what’s the first thing you usually do? Turn on the lights, right? One of the least considered design elements in a room is the light switch.

Legrand is on a mission to elevate the lighting experience and has introduced “a distinctive collection of light switches and wall plates that dials up the design quotient of one’s interior spaces.”

Some of the standouts in this line:

  • The Touch™ Switch uses capacitive touch technology to control lights. features a stunning glass face and operates just like an iPod - simply press your finger on the circle to turn lights on and off.
  • The Wave™ Switch activates lights with the wave of a hand.
  • The SensaSwitch™ turns lights on and off when people enter or leave the room.
  • The Pop-Out™ Outlet is popped out when needed, providing three outlets, and pushed back in to fit flush to the wall when not in use.

Warm and Toasty Walls for a Seattle Luxury Condo

Written by faith | 0

Warm & Toasty on the walls

Why warm and toasty you might ask? Here in Seattle by late October the days are getting shorter and shorter and that results in dark rooms by 4:30pm. The lights come on in our rooms and we yearn for some sun and light through our windows.

In my current project I wanted to offer a solution to my clients who arrived in Seattle from the Midwest. Plus, I am a huge fan of Benjamin Moore and especially the Color Stories palette. The answer I found was Warm and Toasty CSP-915. You can just feel the cozy aura this hue gives (as Benjamin Moore describes it),”warm and sunny in the summer, comforting and snug in the winter.”

Keep on top of trends? The latest one to emerge in color and paint is something called full-spectrum color. It is created from a minimum of five colorants and without the use of black or gray in the mix. The result is richer and bolder color. This Color Stories collection of 240 full spectrum colors offers an unprecedented array of truly unique hues to choose from. “Full spectrum colors are luminescent. They will look different in different light and at different times of the day. This is part of the beauty and attraction of Color Stories,” says Vancouver-based color expert, Heidi Nyline.

We’d be happy to find the perfect paint colors for you, too. Feel free to contact us for a paint color consultation.
