Ten Energy Saving Solutions from Lutron®
Written by faith on October 23rd, 2009The dark is upon us… at least from the window of this expert Seattle interior design. This translates to increased electrical use and utility savings. I would like to share these tips from Lutron about the benefits of dimming.
- Dim a light to 50% and you’ll cut the electricity used by about 40%.
- Lighting accounts for nearly 20% of the average home’s electricity bill, so dimming makes an impact.

Installing one Lutron dimmer in every home in the U.S. in place of a standard light switch would:
• Save $230 million in electricity per year
• Reduce CO2 by 4.3 billion pounds per year
• Equal taking 370,000 cars off the road
Dimming your lights 25% saves 20% in energy. And, the more you dim, the more you save. A 1,500-hour incandescent bulb will last nearly tenyears when dimmed 33% and used 3 hours per day. That’s longer than the average American keeps a home.

I agree completely with your assessment of saving energy by dimming lights. I also think that it’s also essential to make sure that placement of quality, energy efficient plumbing, faucets that don’t drip, and the right-sized heating system. This way you won’t have to turn it on as long to heat up the desired sq. footage of a home or office.

Double dip! For every 3 watts of light you can reduce (either by dimming or turning off), you can also reduce you HVAC demand by 1 watt! Cool blog Faith!

Megan, thanks for adding that to the discussion. Sometimes we overlook the impact on HVAC.

Considering if you break a CFL in your house, you practically need a hazmat team to clean the toxic mess, dimming is definitely the way to go. Save energy, and set up some beautiful scenes for a warm and inviting home.
