On a Mountaintop Art Transforms a Forest

Written by faith on September 1st, 2009

Over the years of my interior design practice I have known many artists. But one in particular is also a special friend, Susan Knight. Over 20+ years I have observed her art evolve and it is breathtaking to me to see this latest installation.

From Sue, “Here’s my cut Mylar suspended in a hemlock tree in a rain forest on the side of a mountain in British Columbia! It was a crazy unique opportunity this month, part of “Return” a temporary showcase of artist installations, sustainable architecture, musical and dramatic performances at Deer Crossing The Art Farm, Gibsons, British Columbia. See more images on my website.”

When I saw this installation I recalled the Gates installation by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in Central Park in NYC in February, 2005. The Gates, a series of over 7000 vinyl and steel structures with hanging “saffron” colored fabric, transformed New York’s Central Park into an enormous art installation in February of 2005.

It took 26 years to raise the funds for the project. The Gates were only up for 15 days. The interesting thing about The Gates and I imagine Return too is that the projects are never intended to be permanent.

My congratulation to Sue for this inspirational contribution.
