Candles - Setting the Mood for the Holidays

Written by faith | 0

Call it what you want – hurricane, tropical storm, super storm… in any case, it has wreaked such shocking devastation not seen in years on the east coast. I am sending prayers and support to everyone suffering from the effects of this disaster. I can sympathize, since living in the Midwest years ago, I experienced ice storms which pulled trees out by the roots. We survived those days using a gas fireplace, as well as lots and lots of candles. Hopefully soon, power will return to those without and candles will once again be used for ambiance instead of illumination.

Candles take many forms - long and tapered, square, cylindrical, you name it, and different styles of candles and candelabra create different looks for your holiday table. Below are some ideas from this Seattle interior designer’s “inspiration book.”

Mercury Glass is very trendy now. This antique look gives your table a festive look.

This manzanita branch candelabra is gorgeous on a coffee table or as a dinner table centerpiece. Try using colored candles to contrast the silver.

These are really cool - pins that hold up any size candle. You can vary the heights and shapes for more drama.

Tips to Add Art Successfully to Your Home

Written by faith | 0

This Seattle interior designer is excited to share that the first Seattle Affordable Art Fair event happens November 8-11. Launched in London in 1999, the mission is to make art buying a welcoming and exciting experience for all audiences. Original, contemporary artworks from local, national and international galleries are your chance to find perfect works for your home or office.

Here are my tips for putting art in your home or office so that you can enjoy it for years to come.

  • Browse art within your community at galleries, local exhibitions and art museums and also as you travel. Hint! the Affordable Art Fair is an excellent place to go.
  • Check out the art on local ‘art walks’ in your neighborhood and start a conversation with the artist and gallery.
  • Pay attention to the art you see in offices, restaurants and homes you visit.
  • Today the internet provides a vast array and source of art worldwide. Whether on museum websites or individual artists sites, you can search to see specific art like photography, abstract, figurative, ceramic and more.
  • Visit places locally that allow you to ‘rent’ art to buy such as museums and galleries.
  • Allow yourself to have an emotional connection to the art you see ~ buy art you love and then find a place to put it. Try art in various locations in your home so the surroundings work with the art you select.
  • Remember that lighting is essential to making art look its best. But be wary of direct sunlight and discuss this with a frame shop to be certain and protect your art purchase.
  • Experiment with how you display your art as placement will increase your enjoyment and satisfaction with your art.

Be sure to attend the Affordable Art Fair which director, Jennifer Jacobs, describes as a ‘museum in the moment’. Get inspired, see displays, ask questions and immerse yourself in art. Here are the details.

Highpoint Market - Color, Color and More Color

Written by faith | 0

Last week, I flew across the country to the “Furniture Capital of the World,” High Point, North Carolina for the High Point Market, the home furnishings industry’s annual showcase for excellence in showroom design. This event lasted a week and was jam packed with educational seminars, opportunities for networking and, of course, a showcase of the latest interior design trends.

High Point is the adrenaline lifeline for this Seattle interior designer. In my “comfy shoes,” I do the marathon of showrooms and appointments and generally succumb to over stimulation after four days (and 2 days of flying).

I love the wonderful relationships established over the years attended and the opportunity to make new ones. There is something to be said for Southern hospitality! This year was all about color, and color is the eye candy for today’s clients. The showrooms have clearly recognized the message and responded with zest.

What do you think of this coral and conch shell table lamp from Bradburn Gallery?

Pink & Yellow - An Exhilarating Combination

Written by faith | 0

October is usually a month of apples and Halloween candy, but it is also a time to remind ourselves to be safe. This month is Breast Cancer Awareness month, an opportunity to take care of ourselves by making an appointment for our yearly breast exam. October is also Window Safety Awareness Month, so it’s also a good time to take stock of your windows and make sure that they are as safe as they are beautiful.

The color pink, symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness can also be electrifying and exciting, especially combined with bright yellow. Lemon Sorbet is Benjamin Moore’s 2013 Color of the Year. Look how great it looks with pink – a dynamic combination!

Accessories to Quickly Freshen your Family Room

Written by faith | 0

In Seattle, interior designer Faith Sheridan feels a crispness in the air. Fall is here with crisp nights and golden sunlight days, and before too many more weeks, the weather will get cold, and you will be spending more time inside your home.

Now it’s time to think about any decorating updates that you’ve been ignoring since you haven’t been spending significant time inside. Accessories refresh your home quickly and easily.

For many people, gathering around the fireplace and drinking warm beverages is a family tradition, and since the fireplace may be your focal point in your room, is your mantel ready for a facelift?
