Near Disaster-Freight Damage Shatters Custom Chandelier

Written by faith | 0

Even the best packaging combined with warning labels-wasn’t enough to avert a disaster. Freight handling left the custom chandelier in pieces.

Handle with Care

For my Seattle design clients and Mercer Island residents, I designed a custom glass chandelier. Working with Savoy Studios in Portland I was excited to know it was arriving last Friday. But without proper handling, excellent packaging and labels, a design disaster can occur.

Nearly two weeks ago, Marcus from the factory sent me an image of the completed chandelier before he began the process of packing. You can see how the kiln-formed, rectangular chandelier is a stunner. The dimensions are 39″ x12″ x13″ high.

The good news - the frame for the electrical is solid and can be used again.. just the lovely glass suffered the damage. Work began today to replace the glass and hopefully the chandelier will be on its way in a few days.

So what happens in this instance? The shipping company (to remain anonymous) is insured and will pay Savoy Studios for the damage incurred to the chandelier. Yes, my design aficionados, designers have damage frequently. Sometimes it’s a packing issue but most often, it’s a handling one. We work with reliable companies so that our clients are served and receive a replacement (like the chandelier) as quickly as possible.

Say Goodbye to Summer-Autumn Outdoor Ideas

Written by faith | 1

Alas, Labor Day weekend is past history which portends the end of summer and begins the school year and football season. Summer was late arriving for this Seattle interior designer and I’m clinging to outdoor living opportunities by adapting my outdoor space. Below find some tips for enjoying outdoor patios with shorter days, cooler evenings and pumpkin-inspired colors.

Savoring the autumn sunshine

Six Tips to Extend Your Outdoor Spaces in Autumn

  • Take a cue from nature’s fall foliage - select pillows, throws, candles and other accessories in orange hues.
  • Punch up the table with accent colors like plum and russet red for napkins and placemats-two colors are fine.
  • Consider adding a placemat with pattern and fall colors to the mix: stripes, seasonal patterns with leaves are readily available.
  • Gather pine cones to use as accessories in baskets and bowls. Rinse, dry and spray paint if you’re adventurous.
  • Fire pits and heaters extend the outdoor entertaining so guests can linger.
  • Plan an al fresco potluck dinner or a wine tasting party with friends and neighbors.

Grilling and Football go Hand in Hand - Show your College Spirit with a Logo

Let the games begin! It’s that time of year when parties are planned around the college football season. The backyard patio celebration includes a BBQ event. So why not show your college spirit too? Try out these BBQ covers with your teams logo.

As a Seattle interior designer, I know lots of parties are planned when the Washington Huskies have a game. Everyone dons some clothing to show their college spirit. You can even display that college loyalty with your grill cover.

And I expect hats and shirts to complete the setting. But to catch attention, start with a house flag.

School Dazed? How to Get Productive at Home or in School

Written by faith | 1

Success in school and at work matters. And ‘back to school’ is the big news theme. Most parents are dedicated to their kids success in school since it influences their entire future. But, if you’re not a parent, and you’re the household king or queen, or you work from home either full or part-time, creating a great study or productive work area is key. So this Seattle interior designer has some tips for you.

Modular Office West Elm

1. Desk with storage and shelves I like this open shelved area for the opportunity to be both a student homework area or a home office one. Everything is in easy reach plus it’s cheerful.

2. Task lighting on the desk or a clamp light on the shelf will add illumination.

3. The chair is ergonomic for comfort so staying focused is much easier.
4. An iPod docking station would be an extra benefit (with headphones) to keep the noise level down.
5. Cord managers for less clutter.
6. Colored office supplies make organization
fun and easy.

Cleverly designed cord management

Imagine your Outdoor Living Space is in Bali with a Thatched Roof

Written by faith | 2

My neighbor goes to Bali every year so I imagine a visit too. I pretend to be looking at the sand and water and sitting under a thatched umbrella sipping a tropical beverage. Not this year! But this Seattle interior designer found a source for an outdoor thatched umbrella and now elements of a Balinese patio are possible in Seattle. Your own South Pacific getaway.

Enter Amazulu! The story behind the company begins with Claire Evans.

“In 2002, Claire opened amaZulu, Inc. to pursue her dream to develop a natural architectural company that would introduce and develop new innovations and sustain higher service standards in the industry. The combination proved prudent and amaZulu secured accounts with Disney, Sea World, and Outback Steak House, soon thereafter.”
