My Textile Junkie Love Affair with Shibori Fabrics

Written by faith | 1

Previously I’ve identified myself as a textile junkie. It’s one of my interior design passions. Why? There is so much history around textiles, culture and traditions. And if you’re passionate as I am about textiles, adding the rich history into your design adds greater dimension to your interiors. It allows a story to easily accompany the design concept. And stories are what your home is about.

From Wikipedia, “In Japan, the earliest known example of cloth dyed with a shibori technique dates from the 8th century.”

There are many greats posts on the blog, The Ardent Thread, to add history and information about techniques. The following images are from the blog.

Mix of shibori styles

Many well know companies have shibori patterns available. I love this one from F Schumacher as an accent for pillows. It is 100% silk with a luster that adds dimension and richness to your decor; color is sorbet.

How to Relax and Smell the Roses

Written by faith | 1

A covered area with heaters

We are busier than ever. More time on the road commuting and increased office time are part of the issue. How to slow our fast paced lives, leave the frenzy and relax? and really stop and smell the roses?

I have a few ideas to add relaxation and to make our homes more harmonious and peaceful at the end of a busy day.

  • Take a walk if you can… with your family, dog or neighbor. Breathe.
  • Sit in your favorite chair even for a short time (and plan to return later).
  • Change into comfortable clothes.
  • Check in with your famiy about their day, listen and support.
  • Hopefully dinner isn’t an afterthought or is easily prepared and your family can pitch in. Enjoy some table talk and share stories.
  • Clear the clutter. Clutter distracts, adds a feeling of disorder and uneasiness.
  • Add freshly cut flowers to your weekly grocery list.
  • Surround yourself with books, throw pillows and blankets.Create a space that looks and feels softer, calmer and more relaxing.
  • Add a swing!

Aren’t you feeling relaxed already? Do you need help creating a relaxing home to ease you from the stress? We’re here to help you do just that. Call us today 206.973.3743.

Enhance Your Home with Luxe Light Switches

Written by faith | 0

When you walk into a room, what’s the first thing you usually do? Turn on the lights, right? One of the least considered design elements in a room is the light switch.

Legrand is on a mission to elevate the lighting experience and has introduced “a distinctive collection of light switches and wall plates that dials up the design quotient of one’s interior spaces.”

Some of the standouts in this line:

  • The Touch™ Switch uses capacitive touch technology to control lights. features a stunning glass face and operates just like an iPod - simply press your finger on the circle to turn lights on and off.
  • The Wave™ Switch activates lights with the wave of a hand.
  • The SensaSwitch™ turns lights on and off when people enter or leave the room.
  • The Pop-Out™ Outlet is popped out when needed, providing three outlets, and pushed back in to fit flush to the wall when not in use.

The Ottoman Empire Strikes Back!

Written by faith | 0

You’ve come a long way baby…the ottoman, that is. Today, it’s storage, extra seating and a coffee table! From small to over-sized, ottomans are a secret weapon for your decorating scheme. This handy piece of furniture is a space saver and an opportunity to make a statement in the middle of the room. Ottomans in recent years have become larger and more versatile to serve as coffee tables as well. Like this one by Hickory Chair that I’m using in a new project.

What I love about this ottoman is the tray plus the option to purchase another. The removable tray can be used to serve appetizers and drinks. Very practical. This is a long ottoman at 60” but will function well in my seating plan because it allows for pull up “small seats” or smaller ottomans at either end when my clients have gatherings.

This ottoman from Neiman Marcus doubles as a storage unit but still looks elegant in a bold chocolate and white pattern.

To add interesting texture to your space, try the “Samar” ottoman from Crate & Barrel, made from handwoven sustainable lampakanai fibers. One could also use this as a footrest or side table.

Apartment living just got easier with this stylish and practical sleeper ottoman from Duralee.

We’d love to help you make your space beautifully efficient. Please contact us for a consultation.

From Runway to Home…Luxury Transcends the Medium

Written by faith | 0

Watching the Jason Wu runway show at Fashion Week, I thought deeply about the transcendent nature of luxury. What elements make an outfit luxurious? A beautiful print here, a flowing fabric there, a certain texture? In this same way, an interior designer adds luxury to a home. Wu did it on the runway with the use of peplums, an abundance of detail at the waist, epaulets and flowy, understated patterns. In interior design, the details add luxury to a room, like pleating, draping and choice of fabric or paint color.

Here we see geometric shapes in the striping of the blouse and the pattern of the steps in the staircase…clean, strong and linear.

Mixing textures makes an item of clothing or a room so much more interesting. On the coat below left, we see a seemingly discordant combination of tan cloth, bronze satiny cuffs and a black fur collar and pockets…but somehow it all comes together. On the right, a gorgeous combination of rattan, chenille and wool makes this outdoor room so luxurious!

The classic combination of red and black gets redefined by Wu in this dress. The bold geometric shape at top gives way to a flowing, pleated skirt. Sometimes two completely different styles can come together in a wow design. A bold touch of red on the burners and the red, geometric teapot perfectly complement the delicate Japanese-esque tile pattern of the backsplash.
