How to Relax and Smell the Roses

Written by faith | 1

A covered area with heaters

We are busier than ever. More time on the road commuting and increased office time are part of the issue. How to slow our fast paced lives, leave the frenzy and relax? and really stop and smell the roses?

I have a few ideas to add relaxation and to make our homes more harmonious and peaceful at the end of a busy day.

  • Take a walk if you can… with your family, dog or neighbor. Breathe.
  • Sit in your favorite chair even for a short time (and plan to return later).
  • Change into comfortable clothes.
  • Check in with your famiy about their day, listen and support.
  • Hopefully dinner isn’t an afterthought or is easily prepared and your family can pitch in. Enjoy some table talk and share stories.
  • Clear the clutter. Clutter distracts, adds a feeling of disorder and uneasiness.
  • Add freshly cut flowers to your weekly grocery list.
  • Surround yourself with books, throw pillows and blankets.Create a space that looks and feels softer, calmer and more relaxing.
  • Add a swing!

Aren’t you feeling relaxed already? Do you need help creating a relaxing home to ease you from the stress? We’re here to help you do just that. Call us today 206.973.3743.

Guide to Outdoor Entertaining in the Heat

Written by faith | 0

For anyone planning an outdoor party this Independence Day, the record-breaking temperatures hitting the US might pose a real challenge.

Try a few of these ideas to cool down your party:

For porches or outdoor rooms with a ceiling, add a ceiling fan. Not only will it help keep you cool, the wind created from the fan will discourage mosquitoes from landing. And it dilutes the carbon dioxide that we expel which attracts them.

Beat the heat with a mist cooling system - these systems spray a fine mist which evaporates so quickly, you’ll feel completely dry and yet many degrees cooler!

Create cool and delicious dishes like classic gazpacho, quinoa black bean salad, cold chicken and berries.

Berries with tequila cream

Guacamole is one of my favorite dishes and it’s a must have for outdoor entertaining. Here’s a great recipe that’s so simple to make and packs a punch!

Recipe from SimplyRecipes.com

Perfect Guacamole Recipe

  • Prep time: 10 minutes

All you really need for guacamole is ripe avocados and salt. After that, the next most important ingredient is lime juice (or lemon if you don’t have lime). Then come the cilantro, chiles, onion, and tomato.

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1/2 red onion, minced (about 1/2 cup)
  • 1-2 serrano chiles, stems and seeds removed, minced
  • 2 tablespoons cilantro (leaves and tender stems), finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh lime or lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
  • A dash of freshly grated black pepper
  • 1/2 ripe tomato, seeds and pulp removed, chopped

Garnish with red radishes or jicama. Serve with tortilla chips.

Method

1 Cut avocados in half. Remove seed. Scoop out avacado from the peel, put in a mixing bowl.

2 Using a fork, roughly mash the avocado. (Don’t overdo it! The guacamole should be a little chunky.) Add the chopped onion, cilantro, lime or lemon, salt and pepper and mash some more. Chili peppers vary individually in their hotness. So, start with a half of one chili pepper and add to the guacamole to your desired degree of hotness. Be careful handling the peppers; wash your hands thoroughly after handling and do not touch your eyes or the area near your eyes with your hands for several hours.

Chilling tomatoes hurts their flavor, so don’t chop the tomatoes or add to the guacamole until ready to serve.

Remember that much of this is done to taste because of the variability in the fresh ingredients. Start with this recipe and adjust to your taste.

3 Cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole to prevent oxidation from the air reaching it. Refrigerate until ready.

4 Just before serving, chop the tomato, add to the guacamole and mix.

Variations

For a very quick guacamole just take a 1/4 cup of salsa and mix it in with your mashed avocados.

The simplest version of guacamole is just mashed avocados with salt. Don’t let the lack of availability of other ingredients stop you from making guacamole.

To extend a limited supply of avocados, add either sour cream or cottage cheese to your guacamole dip. Purists may be horrified, but so what? It tastes great. In fact, guacamole with a little cottage cheese added to it is my favorite.

Yield: Serves 2-4.

Are You Ready for Outdoor Living in the Northwest?

Custom mural with Moroccan theme

Yes, the weather in Seattle and on the West Coast has been teasing us the past couple of weeks. As a result, I hear lots of stories of gardening, planting, and getting the patio or deck ready for outdoor living. Recently, I received the project photos of the featured outdoor space in this blog post. It was wonderful to partner with Gelotte Hommas on this (almost) all season outdoor addition.

The clients entertain frequently and wanted a place for reading and for their family to gather around a cozy fireplace. All the elements of the design were carefully conceived - from the outdoor chandelier, counter stone and indoor/outdoor access to the kitchen and family room. We used the concepts below to create this flowing, functional and beautiful outdoor space.

Tips for a Gorgeous and Functional Outdoor Space

  1. Coordinate your interior and exterior spaces for visual flow.
  2. Complement your furniture to the architecture of your home and the natural surroundings.
  3. Don’t skimp on furniture – budget for it as you would any other element of your home.
  4. Define areas for dining, chatting and lounging.
  5. Consider maintenance when selecting materials for furniture and available storage for cushions.
  6. Choose accessories as you would inside – outdoor area rug, different levels of lighting-candles, chandeliers, party lights.
  7. What about firepits and fireplaces, electronics, outdoor kitchen, refrigeration?
  8. Semi-covered areas and heaters are important for the Northwest.

It’s the details that make this space so elegant

Showcase Your Home for the Holidays

If you’re like this Seattle interior designer, you enjoy decorating your home for the holidays. Of course you’ll have the tree, the stockings and the table settings, but what about other less obvious areas of your home that could use some holiday attention?

The first thing guests see when they visit is the entrance to your home, so dress it up! Here are a couple of fresh ideas I found around the ‘net for your front door:

Let’s head to another area which could benefit from some holiday cheer - the patio. How about a living Christmas tree?

Or how about decorating your garden fountain? Take a look at this “waterfall” from Southern Living.

Farewell to a Stellar Seattle Summer

Written by faith | 0

Seattle savors a stellar summer but the shorter days are sending us the message we all know is coming. As a Seattle interior designer and patio lover, I’m planning to extend my outdoor moments as long as I can. The themes of ‘back to school’ and ‘football parties’ are prime opportunities to gather and socialize as long as possible.

I’ve gathered some tips and ideas with that in mind in this blog post. So keep the grill going, the umbrella up and cushions on your outdoor furniture for a few more weeks.

Gather friends for autumn parties this fall

Below find some tips for enjoying outdoor patios with shorter days, cooler evenings and pumpkin-inspired colors.

Six Tips to Extend Your Outdoor Spaces in Autumn

  • Take a cue from nature’s fall foliage - select pillows, throws, candles and other accessories in orange hues.
  • Punch up the table with accent colors like plum and russet red for napkins and placemats-two colors are fine.
  • Consider adding a placemat with pattern and fall colors to the mix: stripes, seasonal patterns with leaves are readily available.
  • Gather pine cones to use as accessories in baskets and bowls. Rinse, dry and spray paint if you’re adventurous.
  • Fire pits and heaters extend the outdoor entertaining so guests can linger.
  • Plan an al fresco potluck dinner or a wine tasting party with friends and neighbors.
