“Zen-sational” Blog Post

Written by faith | 0

Joe Freenor writes a blog nearly every day at his website, http://cft411.com. And this week he surprised me with his interpretation of my Zen Kitchen remodel. Immediately, I was taken with the well written post and then it all made sense when I read Joe’s biography. Here’s a portion:

“But what I really wanted to do was to look more closely at the kitchen design that Faith Sheridan came up with, because I think it is really quite extraordinary. What first caught my eye with this particular kitchen is that it occupies all of 160 square feet of space, which is about the size of the kitchen I have to contend with. And trust me, given a kitchen as small as that, one really does tend to contend with the space. Lots of the time, I think, we just give up on it.”

“Because what Faith did is such a transformation, I wanted this blog’s last photograph to be a “before shot,” because it reminded me of W.L. Bateman’s saying, “If you keep on doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep on getting what you’ve always got.” If the new kitchen were to be different, all the thinking that went into the re-design of it had to be different, which is exactly what Faith delivered.”

How A Natural Design Respects the Setting

Written by faith | 0

This interior designer in Seattle begins new project planning with a review mentally of my first impressions of the home, the overall goals and then the feeling the clients wish to create. The location of this interior design project is Mercer Island, WA on the waterfront. Not the original owners, my clients purchased over 20 years ago after the previous owners added a 1970 addition. My clients quickly remodeled the ‘cottage’ into a 2 story bedroom wing but left untouched the 1970 addition. So this is the project and view.

Can’t say I love the era of the 70′s construction as it’s not architecturally interesting to me. However, sitting on the water and offering incredible views and an open plan, this opportunity to gut/remodel without altering the footprint will be exciting. I see playing with textures and the strong horizontal lines as a design direction. (New kitchen, powder room, pantry, laundry + windows will transform.) I am fortunate to work with Prestige Custom Builders on this project.

My texture source is a company that excels with textures, Phillip Jeffries. Now in its third decade, Phillip Jeffries Ltd. has emerged as the industry leader in hand crafted wallcoverings. A manufacturer and importer of unique and fine quality textured wallcoverings, the company was founded in 1976.

Restoring a Home in WA Wine Country

Written by faith | 0

In our Sunday Seattle Times I enjoyed a story about the restoration of a home by Paul Gregutt and his wife. While I am an expert Seattle interior designer, Gregutt is a highly regarded wine writer. Appropriately, they found a 1,000-square-foot, rundown cottage in Eastern Washington, where the grapes are grown and most of the wineries are.

In Waitsburg — population 1,212 — Gregutt and his wife found a tumbledown cottage, originally built around 1875, that survived a series of unfortunate additions over the decades and a great deal of neglect.

With a local team of professionals working with them, this photo shows the progress after six months. New roof, new foundation, new windows, new porch. The fake siding was removed and they patched the original.
Here’s one of my favorite images… imagine this view during the seasons of the year.
