Are you indoors for fall yet? The temperature is dropping, and we’re all heading inside or at least starting the process of adjusting to Fall. Many of my clients (and me, too) love the seasonal change of autumn. Yes, we still have warm sunny days, and they only add to the growing excitement around fall activities.
Entering Fall can feel abrupt, especially after a beautiful summer like the one we enjoyed in Seattle. As I gaze around my condo I took a look and decided to share 7 decorating tips for this season. NO need to overhaul or clash with what’s existing. These are opportunities to summon and embrace the season.
7. Blankets and throws
You will hear me describe myself as ‘running on cold,’ so throws and blankets (and socks) are key accessories. I have a lightweight cashmere throw that is part of my fall and winter essentials. I describe the color as ‘autumnal orange’.
Adding a few cozy pieces into your home are sure to bring you physical and visual warmth this season.
6. Rugs for those cold floors
Late this summer, I changed my entry rug to a textured, geometric one. It’s welcoming, and it’s simple pattern works well with the other furnishings in my home. Rugs are an especially great idea if you have cold floors, such as tile (like I do) or hardwoods.
5. Window coverings to keep in the warmth
In Seattle, window treatments are generally minimal. Lots of clients use shades only as we have wonderful views all year long. For some clients who like to soften the feeling at their windows, I add side panels. Sometimes they move and other times they don’t. The window is an opportunity for pattern play, color and design too.
4. Local fall mantel decor
In Seattle there’s a mix of very contemporary sleek fireplaces without mantels or the more traditional wood mantel treatment. Fortunately, there are many ways to add to the fireplace and mantel decor, no matter which you find in your home.
Chunky candles are a good start along with mini pumpkins and gourds in containers and bowls. Don’t forget the great resources at your local garden shop and add tall boughs and stems!
3. Spicy, seasonal candles
Candles can be mixed for size, height and color. And there are great colors to be had. (The same is true of containers!) Scents are certain to trigger familiar memories that will excite your family and friends when they enter.
2. Hydrangeas, pinecones, and pumpkins
Hydrangeas in beautiful colors and pots add to tabletop design or can also surround the fireplace. Pinecones, pine sprigs, and pumpkins and colorful gourds aren’t just for your mantel. Sprinkle them tastefully around your home to get folks excited for Halloween, Thanksgiving and beyond.
1. Gathering spaces for football and fall festivities
Yes, it’s also football season! For lots of friends, family (and even our clients), the flatscreen takes on the focal point. If it’s above the fireplace, place your furniture in that direction and feel free to decorate the room in the same colors as your team. When the Seahawks or Huskies are playing, there will be an even more excited energy in the room!
Sounds easy, right? If you’re just as excited about fall and enjoying indoors, I hope you’ll use the tips to add an extra special touch to your space, whether it’s your Seattle condo or a family home — a little will go a long way.
