Area rugs serve so many purposes in our interiors so how to determine the right size for your home? Before answering that critical question, I want to point out some of the benefits of area rugs. Rugs protect our floors and offer sound absorption plus they soften the interior design. From a design perspective, they add pattern, color and contribute to the overall design concept. But, now back to the question of how to size them.
As a designer, I prefer a rectangle for area rugs versus some of the other options like round or oblong and such. I like to show the wood floor keeping in mind other details of the room. For example, if you’re fortunate to have inlaid details around the edges of your room, please don’t cover them. In large rooms you may leave up to 18″ and in smaller rooms, 6-12″. The most important factor is determining the traffic pattern or where the foot traffic will travel. Avoid possible tripping by leaving the walkway clear.
One key principal to follow is to place some of the furniture half on and half off the rug. This will anchor the rug to the furniture grouping and unify the design concept. If you want a cozy room grouping, this is most important so please follow this rule. But in a dining room, it’s important to note the distance that chairs will extend when pulled out. Experiment with your dining room table and chairs to see what this measurement is and use that to determine the best size for your rug.
Another consideration is the color of the floor itself. You want contrast so you wouldn’t place an all brown rug on a brown wood floor. Multiple colors will do the trick and also make for an interesting rug.
So much product is available and you’ll find stacks of rugs in a showroom but I’m more inclined to design a rug because I have a deep understanding of proportion and scale and I’m crazy about textiles. Let me find the perfect rug for your project. 206.973.3743
