As the Mema of two grandsons under 5, I know successful interior design and children means a marriage of performance fabrics among other things. With today’s improved performance fabrics you can enjoy your beautifully decorated home and share your furniture too.
This image from Sunbrella illustrates the concept well using a solid fabric for a sectional and accent pillows for color.
A few years ago my daughter wanted to save two Hickory Chair ottomans from potential toddler destruction. For her a slipcover in a performance fabric was a furniture-saving solution.
Upholstered furniture takes a beating in homes with active families. Sofas and sectionals act like magnets to everyday use with snacks, dirty handprints, juice spills, muddy shoes, and more. Plan ahead and select a performance fabric. Accidents will happen so keep the directions for spot removal nearby and reduce your stress. Enjoy your furniture and family.
My go-to solution for families with children is an ottoman large enough for use as a coffee table. Rather than the typical wood or glass materials which have sharp corners and can scratch easily, an upholstered ottoman is forgiving. The photo example from Taylor King inspires a family-friendly upholstery group for frequent use by adults, children and pets.
As the grandmother of two young boys under five, I can report they learned to stand and walk as they used the surface of the ottoman for support and balance. Later it was a surface for all sorts of toys, books and games.
So how do you add accents and accessories when you want to avoid stains, breakage and such? I suggest the mantel if one is available and colorful artwork. The shorter members of the family cannot disturb them and the family can enjoy art and accessories for the color, pattern and themes they add to the room. Here is a wonderful, whimsical print by Matias Duarte that you can find at Third and Wall with a child-like theme.
