According to Carleton Varney, Dorothy Draper launched this concept many years ago. “Dorothy liked the idea of furniture becoming part of the architecture of a room and blending in with the background so your eye didn’t jump from one fabric to another,” said Mr. Varney.

I fell in love with this room when I saw it in the WSJ Real Estate section. Notice how the room doesn’t feel busy or claustrophobic. Instead, the art above the sofa with lots of white space softens and creates a fresh look. Fabric and wallpaper by Clarence House.

There was a time when Laura Ashley was the thing. And maybe all that floral paper and fabric led to the decline of coordinating. It did give me a headache.
