Why Guilford Green is the Color of the Year 2015

I heard some rumbles about why Guilford Green is color of the year 2015. Some happy and some not so. And recently I posted about the Color Season. When I heard about Guilford Green, I smiled and recalled a project from 2010.

Color of the Year 2015

Per Benjamin Moore, “HC-116 This color is part of the Historic Color Collection. A collection of 174 time-honored hues comprises our most popular palette. Steeped in tradition, the refined, elegant colors of the Historical Collection deliver timeless color that can be used in traditional as well as contemporary spaces.” This collection of colors is a mainstay for designers including me.

Guilford Green is a neutral which unites a silvery blue tint perfect to use in both traditional and contemporary settings Here’s how I used it in a second home guest bedroom.

My clients for this project love textiles that are classic like the Cowtan and Tout fabrics featured at the window, sham and headboard.

What are the style elements that make this Guilford Green and Cowtan and Tout guest bedroom work?

  1. A focal fabric pattern at the window which is repeated with bed shams.
  2. Complementary headboard fabric that adds texture and contrast.
  3. A solid color bedspread and throw gives ‘space’ to the dominant pattern.
  4. Lack of clutter allows the fabric to be the focus.

In these images you see the reason for calling Guilford Green a neutral and a color that goes from bedroom to entry to casual or formal. It’s a wonderfully refreshing and classic color all at the same time.
