Colors and Finishes for Pike Market Project

How I Selected Colors and Finishes for Pike Market Project

This before image tells the story of West facing exposure 7 stories above the famed Pike Place Market in Seattle. Accounting for the light guided my color and finish selections for the kitchen and bedroom and the baths with no natural light. It’s a juggling act in the Pacific Northwest with intense light for six months over long days and then the opposite for the rest of the year.

First, an all new custom kitchen is coming very soon. The existing high end appliances stayed along with the floors but that was all of the kitchen that did. I chose a soft gray stain as the finish color on maple for the cabinets after finding some of that color in the floors. The tile backsplash and counters become very important elements to the design and I turned to Ann Sacks for some mosaic magic.

This tile adds the right amount of punch to make the kitchen stunning and balance the competition outside the windows. I loved the description from Ann Sacks, “graphic, dramatic, Selvaggio means “wild” in Italian.” Next counters from Silestone a request from my clients. After editing 10 possibilities, the winner was Alpina White. Silestone is a compound made up of 94% natural quartz, making it exceptionally hard and resilient, with built in anti-bacterial protection.

The color and finish finale is the paint tone. It is made simpler by something I learned nearly 2 years ago when Benjamin Moore introduced Color Stories full spectrum paint colors. Do you know about these? I’ve learned that the Color Stories palette combined with Affinity is my go to resource for projects in the Pacific Northwest.

Full spectrum paint does not use black or gray tints. Instead, more pigments, between five and seven, are incorporated per color (traditional methods generally utilize three pigments). These colors have greater clarity and purity ~ enough said. To balance the gray tones, I proposed Ylang Ylang, a calm, meditative yellow.
