Ottomans Enhance Function In Your Home

It’s no secret that I love ottomans and add them to every project in multiple rooms. They are the workhorses for interior spaces adding function and style and sometimes storage too.

In this post I’ll share ways you can use ottomans effectively for style and function.

  1. As a Coffee Table

Like the Bexley shown in the photo above from Hickory Chair, a tray becomes a carrier for beverages or a container for flowers, decanter or candles. What I particularly like about the Bexley is that the wide edge becomes a ‘perch’ as your family and guests move around your room. The rectangular form suits a sofa well as this ottoman is 60″ x 30″. When centered in front of a sofa and opposite 2 chairs it anchors a conversation area.

The addition or option of a tray to an upholstered ottoman is another idea as problems with spills decrease and the tray also becomes a decorative accent. I have the upholstered ottoman below in my living room, by the way.

I like to work a 48-54 inch ottoman into the furniture design, centering it in front of the grouping or even the fireplace. When upholstered the textile adds color, pattern and texture to warm up the seating group and enhance the mood of the room. And don’t forget, these soft sided coffee tables/ottomans are ideal for families and grandparents because little ones can’t bump their heads on them.

And the option to store ‘things’ inside the ottoman speaks for itself. Today we need all the storage we can find!

2. Ottomans are Extra Seats

Often we need extra seats and some ottomans fit that description very well as ~small seats. They are especially useful since you can tuck them away for those occasions when you have extra guests. I am particularly fond of this one from Hickory Chair for its design and often use it in pairs.

I also like ottomans at the foot of a bed. This is a great place for the bedspread and extra pillows from your bed at night. Plus an upholstered ottoman is another seat when you put on your shoes in the morning. Sometimes I recommend small ottomans in bathrooms and closet spaces if space permits.

3. When you Need to Rest Your Feet

When I rest and relax I love to put my feet up. And that’s why you see an ottoman paired with a lounge chair. There’s a long history for ‘footstools’ and I find them the perfect accompaniment to a favorite chair used for reading and TV watching. Note: when paired with a lounge chair the style of both should match for a cohesive look.
