Towering high above the famed Pike Place Market is 1521, a luxury high rise building with 180 degree views of the Puget Sound. After spending many years living in Chicago, my clients relocated here, bringing with them a trove of collections from their frequent travels. Our challenge was to thoughtfully incorporate these treasures throughout the home so they could be enjoyed on a daily basis.
First, they reimagined a dining room area as a library. The space provides a cozy retreat for reading, viewing television and conversation. It further houses many books of course, but more importantly, showcases some collections they treasure. The carefully edited design is perfect for display and features cerused walnut, custom lighting for books and the collection. No surprise that this room is a favorite.
Over many years and moves, my clients acquired high quality furnishings and wished to utilize them in a much smaller space than their former home. So reupholstering with carefully selected textiles, we preserved and updated those furnishings. It was a perfect solution.
The designer side of me especially likes placing the furniture in atypical fashion by using the large window as a backdrop for a handsome buffet. Or in the casual dining area by using wheels on a drop-leaf table for function. Grandchildren often visit and that table is very useful.
Overall, the flow of traffic in this luxury condo is seamless for friends and family because of the clever furniture placement.
A long, low bench in the entry performs as display for collections of Asian vases. A custom cabinet received a special paint finish and many coats of the same to smoothly merge into the collected items plus provide valuable storage so important in condos.
In the master bedroom the height of the bed is balanced by the floor to ceiling draperies. Carefully editing furniture again allows a collection to remain in use and in view. Exquisite textiles are able to endure the sun and light preserving the furnishings.
