Small-Space Secrets from a Seattle Designer

Small space secrets from a Seattle designer ~

Looking for some small-space ideas? Do you live in a city condo or apartment? I have some small space secrets for you in this post.

  • Our homes tell a story about who we are no matter if they’re a small space. Don’t resist the opportunity. The trips, the family, the friends, the mementos and especially the photos tell who you are. Put them someplace to enjoy yourself and also share with others. Tell your story.

  • Attract the eye with layers, textures and variations of color and light. Mix it up as they say. Use a variety of metals, add a Roman or grass shade next to a drapery panel, paint an accent wall. Or some more ideas, add wallcovering and use a mirror to reflect the outdoors or an interior wall.

  • Do not neglect lighting! Use several sources from overhead like recessed and surface mounts, to sconces, floor and table lamps. Lamps are wonderful sources of personalization too. Here are two excellent examples from Global Views and Currey and Co.

  • Horrible view out your windows? Use woven or grass shades that let in light but filter the view. Or you can place plants outside your window to camouflage an unattractive view. Window film is another solution.

  • Scale and balance are critical. So carefully consider your furniture to fit your room’s proportion. Large, over-scaled sofas with bulky arms are a no-no in a small space. Likewise, a room of overly small furniture pieces becomes busy and uninviting. If your room has a high ceiling, please take advantage by using large pieces of art or try an arrangement of multiple pieces of art. We refer to this as a gallery wall.
