This Seattle interior design pro knows the method aka Splurge and Conserve. It’s a frequent conversation with clients around a budget for their design project. Where should I splurge and where can I conserve? And every client will come from a different direction depending on their stage of life and interests. A Pinterest board shows a vision of the look they want and their budget shows what amount they have for their project without breaking the bank account.
In the image above you see high style and ask, “How can I splurge and conserve to get this look?” I recommend clients invest in one or two fabulous items, like a quality sofa or chairs that set the stage and style for the room. Then, we conserve their budget with high-style but lower-cost furnishings and accents. For an savvy designer who knows her way around the industry this is easy to do. (note I said savvy)
I suggest my clients buy the highest quality upholstered furniture they can afford. Why? Quality upholstery looks good today when purchased and it looks good years later. The quality craftsmanship delivers year after year. Yes, it’s an investment for a kiln-dried hardwood frame, 8-way hand-tied coils and a superior cushion.
This sofa is an example of the conserve approach delivering high style but using a less expensive frame, construction and cushions. It is half the cost of the splurge sofa and will last fewer years but delivers an option for clients getting started with furnishings. (and a young family)
Today, it’s harder to find inexpensive lamps but they’re out there. A splurge lamp will have a details like a base of wood, a silk shade and china or porcelain base. It may become a prized possession as an investment. The alternative looks great too but the materials and craftsmanship are decidedly different.
